People Are Everything. S1: Episode 10 - Brian Murray

Light aircraft pilot, wannabe song and dance man, amateur drummer and man who built St Thomas's hospital - Brian is an engigma and at 92, hasn't lost any of his wit and wisdom!

Welcome to Season 1: Episode 10 of People Are Everything, the weekly podcast in which I ask my guests, "Who are the five people who have shaped the person you are today?"

And today, I have a treat for you all! Today, I am talking to Brian Murray. At 92, Brian is my oldest friend in both senses of the word. We met when I was seven to his 42, and we've been buddies ever since. Brian is a light aircraft pilot (finally grounded at age 86 due to COVID-19 restrictions), a drummer, and most significantly, he project-managed the construction of St Thomas's Hospital, Wood Green Shopping Centre, as well as Nuclear Power Plants and numerous other large-scale civic engineering projects.

In this episode, Brian talks of the war years and how he and his family survived London during the Blitz. How he left school with little more than a "good luck" but rose through the ranks from apprentice bricklayer to managing multi-million pound projects for Laing's. We talk of his flying career and his unrequited lifelong dream to "be a song and dance man”

He is many things, but to me, he was —and is —just a very special friend, and I’m so happy to share him with you all.

And as you'll see from this episode, his comic timing is as sharp as ever!

We're taking a short break now for Easter and will return on April 22nd with Season Two.

Until then, please take care and Happy Easter!
